The Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia IIT (www.iit.it) with headquarters in Genova (Italy) is a non-profit institution with the primary goal of creating and disseminating scientific knowledge and strengthening Italy's technological competitiveness. The research areas cover scientific topics of high innovative content, which represent the most advanced frontiers of modern technology, with wide application possibilities in various fields ranging from medicine to industry, from computer science to robotics, life sciences, and nanobiotechnology.
A Technologist position is available in Pisa at the Center for Nanotechnology Innovation (CNI@NEST), part of the IIT-Network of centers in Italy.
The Center is an interdisciplinary R&D center dedicated to the investigation and exploitation of phenomena at the nanoscale. CNI@NEST activities span from molecular medicine and advanced diagnostics, to energy-scavenging nanosystems, to nanoprocess standardization.

The successful candidate for this position should have a wide experience, with at least 10 years of post doctoral activity, demonstrated by an established track record of publications, in transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and crystallography with a deep knowledge in conventional TEM imaging, highresolution TEM imaging, electron diffraction tomography, and conventional and precession electron diffraction.
A PhD in Physics or Material Science or equivalent is mandatory. Due to the interdisciplinarity of the scientific program of the IIT Center, the ideal candidate must be proficient in the application of TEM techniques to different contexts, including inorganic chemistry, nanotechnology, cell biology, and mineralogy.
Experience in the development of new transmission electron microscopy techniques related to structure solution of unknown crystal structures and nano texture analysis is a bonus. Previous experience in x-ray single crystal and powder diffraction and in synchrotron radiation diffraction experiments is highly recommended. Fluency in English is essential.
- Responsibility of the technical and post doc staff associated to the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) facility.
- TEM laboratory management, TEM instrument maintenance and scheduling, training of new TEM users and coordination of commercial activities related to the TEM lab.
- Development of new TEM techniques for the solution of new unknown crystal structures and nanotexturing analysis.
- Design of an independent research activity in the field of structure characterization of nanomaterials and biological samples that are of interest for the CNI@NEST center.
Applications deadline April 28, 2014.
- a detailed curriculum vitae
- 5 representative publications
- 3 pages of research statement
Candidates should also request 3 evaluation letters from international experts.
