Post-doc : Growth and scanning probe characterization of two-dimensional crystals

The Center for Nanotechnology Innovation IIT@NEST in Pisa (Italy) is inviting applications for a postdoctoral fellow to join a multidisciplinary group of scientists working in the area of “Growth and scanning probe characterization of two-dimensional crystals”.

IIT@NEST is an interdisciplinary R&D center within the network of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) devoted to investigating and exploiting phenomena at the nanoscale. IIT is a private law foundation jointly established by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research and the Ministry of Economy and Finance, with the aim of promoting excellence in both basic and applied research.
We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated postdoctoral fellow to work on a research project relating to “Growth and scanning probe characterization of two-dimensional crystals”.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are an emerging and appealing class of 2D materials with the potential to exhibit unprecedented electronic, chemical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to implement in a scalable manner devices based on such 2D films their large area growth needs to be implemented and their fundamental properties investigated.

In the course of this project the successful candidate will synthetize atomically thin TMDs films and other 2D materials by means of chemical vapor deposition. Particular focus will also be on the characterization of the structural and electronic properties of such crystals via optical and scanning-probe techniques, such as Atomic Force Microscopy, micro-Raman and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Specifically, STM will be used to study 2D materials and their interfaces with other 2D films down to the atomic level.

This research activity will be carried out in collaboration with IIT Graphene Labs (http://graphene.iit.it) and will be embedded in the Future & Emerging Technologies flagship project on graphene and other 2D crystals supported by the European Union (http://www.graphene-flagship.eu/GF/index.php) for the 2013-2023 period.

Eligible candidates should have a PhD in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or a related discipline. We value scientists who can interact effectively with an interdisciplinary team, have a high level of independence and take accountability for their project.


  • Strong background in surface science and 2D materials.
  • Documented experience in structural and electrical characterization of 2D materials. 

Previous experience in STM studies of 2D materials is a plus but not mandatory.
A competitive salary depending on experience will be offered.
