By transferring knowledge and technologies to the society and industry at large, IIT’s inventions generate income to support further research and reward inventors.

2018-23 Strategic Plan is organized in four research domains: Computational Science, Life Technologies (Life Tech), Nanomaterials, and Robotics.
Independent Principal Investigators (PIs) lead research lines coordinated under the umbrella of the research domains.
Facilities
IIT facilities contribute to the development of the Strategic Plan. High-qualified facility staff provides scientific and technical assistance for basic and applied research, relying on state-of-art equipment. Each facility offers researchers and students an extensive range of services from essential routine to more advanced technical and consulting services.
Initiatives
Initiatives are visionary research directions that leverage on IIT’s unique standing and excellent research infrastructure “to lead us where no one has been before”. Initiatives contribute to IIT’s positioning in their respective field, to training of young scientists and, importantly, to creating the necessary critical mass. Initiatives further contribute to address the big societal challenges defined in the Strategic Plan, namely, sustainability, health care and the ageing population.
Moonshot projects
What is a moonshot project? It is a plan designed to reach the (almost) impossible. We are working on ambitious plans to overcome knowledge limits and design the future.
